Our enthusiastic STEM Outreach Team are dedicated to raising the aspirations of young people and informing them about the many opportunities available within STEM. Within the team we have a variety of specialisms and decades of experience in teaching and science communication.
Dr Peter Hoare
Outreach Officer
I studied BSc and PhD degrees in Chemistry at Durham University, followed by a PGCE in Chemistry & PE at Newcastle University. I enjoyed a 20-year stint teaching at Ponteland Community High School in Northumberland followed by 9 years as the Chemistry Outreach Officer at the University. I now work as an Outreach Officer, developing and delivering STEM activities and post-16 learning & teaching resources for schools, including chemistry, to a wide range of audiences.
Naomi Nelson

In 2021, I graduated from Newcastle University in BSc Biology, and in MSc Wildlife Management in 2022. Working with primary school aged students as part of the Newcastle University Street Science team, in addition to my university studies surrounding science communication, I became interested in scientific outreach, widening participation and raising aspirations of the next generation. I believe it is extremely important to deconstruct stereotypes surrounding STEM and encourage everyone to achieve their goals; as an Outreach Ambassador, I hope to help young people realise their potential in the wonderful world of STEM, regardless of their background.

I lead the Undergraduate student recruitment and outreach activity for the Faculty of Medical Sciences. I have worked at the university for 8 years and have a passion for encouraging students from underrepresented backgrounds into Medical Sciences career routes.
Matt Larkin
Outreach Coordinator
I graduated from Newcastle University in 2017 with a BA in History. As an Outreach Coordinator, I help run a range of on-campus events and deliver a variety of workshops to young people from diverse backgrounds. I am particularly interested in giving young people exciting opportunities that they may not experience otherwise, in order to help them make a more informed decision regarding their future.
