Sea, Sounds and Surveying

45 – 60 minutes | Up to 25 Students | Year 9 – 11

Did you know that 71% of the earth’s surface is covered by water? Yet we know more about the surface of Mars than we do about the seafloor!

In this workshop, find out how hydrographic surveyors use sound to measure the depth of the ocean and create underwater maps.

The workshop is comprised of a presentation about Sea, Sounds and Surveying, which includes a short maths-based activity, and is accompanied by a hands-on exercise where students get to map ‘the seafloor’ without sight.

This workshop is applicable for a wide range of subject areas, including Geography, Geology, Maths, Physics and Careers.
